Petulla are traditional Albanian fried dough treats, crispy on the outside and soft on the inside. These golden delights are perfect for breakfast, dessert, or a quick snack. Petulla can be served with powdered sugar, honey, jam, or yogurt, making them a versatile and delicious addition to any table.
Ingredients
2 cups (250g) all-purpose flour
1 tsp salt
1 tsp sugar
1/2 tsp baking powder
3/4 cup (180ml) warm water or milk
1 tbsp (15ml) vegetable oil
1 tsp dry yeast (optional, for extra fluffiness)
2 cups (500ml) vegetable oil (for frying)
Instructions
Prepare the Dough In a bowl, mix flour, salt, sugar, and baking powder. If using yeast, dissolve it in warm water and let sit for 5 minutes before adding. Gradually add warm water or milk and vegetable oil, mixing until a soft dough forms.
Rest the Dough Cover the dough and let it rest for 30 minutes to allow the gluten to develop.
Shape the Petulla Take small pieces of dough and flatten them into round or oval shapes (about ¼ inch thick).
Fry Until Golden Heat vegetable oil in a pan over medium heat. Fry each petulla until golden brown and crispy on both sides, about 2 minutes per side. Remove and place on a paper towel to drain excess oil.
Serving Serve petulla warm, dusted with powdered sugar, drizzled with honey, or paired with yogurt and feta cheese for a savory twist.
Petulla are quick, easy, and incredibly satisfying. Whether you prefer them sweet or savory, these crispy fried dough bites will bring a taste of Albanian tradition to your table.
